After a via ferrata tour, we were starving and drove to the closest restaurant we had seen.
We had drove past it on our way to the tour.
It had caught my eye because it looked like a restaurant that had that ‘home cooked food’ vibes.
We arrived, and Yvonne jumped out of the car and went inside and asked if they had a table available.
‘Yeah, I can fit you in. We only have Sunday roast, though’, replied the owner.
“I’ll take it!”, Yvonne confirmed.
We parked the car and sat down.
Shortly after settling in, we got the menus.
I read it and honestly did not know what to order.
We asked our waiter and he kindly explained, “We have two roasts, a small and a big one. You can choose the size, and the meat”.
Uh…
“We will take two small of chicken”, please.
The waiter asked if we wanted anything else. It sounded like we were not going to get full…
We cautiously said: “Hm…no, thanks, we will start with that and see how it goes”
Thank the universe we did that!!
What came out of the kitchen was a massive plate of deliciousness.
I’ve never had a traditional Thanksgiving plate in my life. But based on what movies and TV shows have told me, I could summarize the Sunday Roast as Thanksgiving on your plate (except for the Yorkshire pudding).
That big brown thing you see on the plate on the picture above is a Yorkshire Pudding. Who knows why it got the name ‘pudding’. Because it has nothing “puddingy” about it.
Here is the definition from our friend ChatGPT:
As ChatGPT mentions, the Yorkshire pudding is traditionally eaten with the roast beef roast only.
However, they added it to our chicken one and wow…
It was a real experience! Everything was so delicious and filling. And the Yorkshire pudding absorbed the gravy so well…
I am glad I was starving, because that plate filled me up for hours!
We had this at around 1pm.
We did not eat anything else after that.
It was a happy day indeed.
We had a Sunday Roast every Sunday after that on our 4-week road trip through the UK.
We also learned that traditionally, families have Sunday Roast at home.
Here are the three Sunday Roasts we enjoyed on our trip:
Also, locals told us that this is usually a winter meal. I’m glad we were able to enjoy it in summer.
Sunday roast gets 5 stars!
